Who made the hemp crop illegal?
Three men, Henry J. Anslinger, Lammont DuPont, and William Randolph Hearst, made growing hemp illegal. Anslinger was the head of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics. DuPont and Hearst were the owners of the largest chemical company and newspaper, respectively.
Why would these men want hemp made illegal?
Trees had become the number one paper source during this time. hearst, in addition to owning a nationwide chain of newspapers, also owned every bit of timber used to make them. The new threat of cheap hemp meant that trees would no longer be the cheapest source of paper. DuPont had patented the process for producing synthetic nylon from oil and coal as well as a new improved sulfate process to make paper from wood pulp. If DuPont would have had to compete against environmentally-friendly hemp products, his business would have suffered.
How did they make hemp illegal?
Hearst began printing outlandish stories with headlines such as "Marijuana goads user to blood lust" and "Hotel clerk identifies Marijuana smoker as gunman". He also took advantage of the country's prejudice against blacks and immigrants by printing that marijuana-crazed negroes were raping white women and by painting pictures of lazy, pot-smoking Mexicans. DuPont's banker Andrew Mellon happened to be Secretary of the Treasury under Herbert Hoover. Mellon also had a nephew-in-law, Henry Anslinger, who had the Marijuana Tax Law of 1937 passed. When asked what this meant for industrial hemp farmers, Anslinger flatly declared "They can continue to raise hemp just as they have always done it. It makes very fine cordage and this legislation exempts the mature stalk when it is grown for hemp purposes." However, due to the overall similarity in appearance between hemp and marijuana, the entire Cannabis family was made illegal. Hemp made a brief resurgence during World War II after Japan cut of supplies for raw fibers. The U.S. Department of Agriculture released the short film Hemp For Victory encouraging all farmers to grow hemp for the war effort. However, it went back to its illegal standing after the war.
Why should hemp be made legal again?
There are separate seed strains of hemp that produce a negligible amount of THC. Growing marijuana requires special seeds and growing technique.
Hemp is versatile enough to make thousands of different items and could rescue family farms throughout America, including right here in Arkansas.
Hemp is the best source of biomass for all forms of energy.
Hemp is the longest and strongest fiber of any plant on the planet.
It is a viable, profitable crop which can be grown using less pesticides and fertilizers than any other textile crop.
Hemp could stimulate the economy because of the many industries in which it could be used.
Hemp is legal in the U.S. as an import, which means that U.S. farmers are losing out on a profitable opportunity.

It's not too late to evolve. We can still change our Value system.
"GALACTIC ARCHIVES:
After the RICH Economy had revolutionized the lives and expectations of Unistaters on and off Terra, Eve Hubbard realized that the time was now ripe to abolish poverty entirely. She did this by declaring every citizen aa shareholder in the L5 space cities aaand distributing the National Divedends everry year...
Hubbard called her Nation Dividend tickets "trade aids" a term devised by a public relations firm she had commissioned to make the idea palatable to DOMESTICATED PRIMATES.
Trade aids were like money only in that they could be exchanged for commodities or services. They were unlike money in that they could not be loaned at interest...
Trade aids were also unlike money in that they could not be hoarded. Each ticket was dated, and lost value at one percent per month after the issue date, becoming totally valueless in one hundred months. There was thus a builtt in incentive to spend the trade aids as soon as possible.
When the first trade aid dividends were distributed, it turned out that even the poorest citizens of Unistat had the ezuivalent of eighty thousand for that year, in purchasing power, even though the tickets were not called "money"
Citizens with that much purchasing power have huge DEMAND, in the economic sense of ability to buy. The economy expanded more rapidly than ever, with new busiinesses springing up continually, both on Terra and in the space cities.
By 1995 starvation had been eliminated everywhere."

more than 97 billion beverage cans and bottles were wasted in 2000, fifty percent more than in 1992. Had they been recycled, these containers could have saved the equivalent of the twenty seven mission barrels of oil, enough to keep over two million average American cars on the road for a year, or enough to supply five million American homes with electricity for a year.
States with bottle bills have an average recycling rate of eighty percent, while non deposit states recycle an average of forty of beverage containers sold. Although states with bottle bills comprise only twenty nine of the nation's population, they account for half of the containers recycled annually in the United States.

ONE OF OUR TIMES GREATEST THINKERS COMMENTS ON OUR "WAR ON SOME TERRORISTS"
I've been an avid reader of Robert Anton Wilson since I first read Schrodinger's Cat an realized that my entire life was a big lie that I had been telling to myself. I've read almost all of his books since then and think that he is a mind comparable to Plato or Jesus. After Sept. 11 I started going to his webpage every chance I got to see what he thought about what was going on, and one of his "Thoughts of the Week" moved me to the point of printing it out and letting everyone I can get it out to read it. Here it is. You can find more on:

"FIENDISH PLOTS
21 SHa`baan 1422 A.H.
Fu who?
-- THE FIENDISH PLOT OF DR. FU MANCHU
Last night I looked at THE FIENDISH PLOT OF DR. FU MANCHU on TV, partly because it starred Peter Sellers as both Dr. Fu and his enemy Nayland Smith of Scotland Yard, and partly because I wanted to compare the epic battle between Fu and Smith with the current rumble between Dubya and Osama bin Laden.
I have long regarded Dr Fu as both archetype and stereotype -- the incarnation of British fear of Oriental revenge for imperialist invasions. Osama fits that role very well indeed, and the Dubya/Smith parallel came across with almost synchronistic shock:
"The difference between Fu and me," Smith sez, "is that I'm Good and he's Evil."
Have Dubya's speech-writers read the original Fu novels or just seen this film?
Unlike the novels, the film does not portray Dr Fu as driven by "motiveless malignancy" [like Dubya explaining Osama: "He is a man who is an evil man."] On the contrary, Fu has a personal grudge we can understand: as a boy he had to work in his father's laundry at Eton, and starching all those white collars drove him bonkers. That makes more sense to me as a novelist than the unmotivelated malice of Osama, as portrayed by Dubya, CNN and the other corporate spin doctors.
Fear not, O true believers: the film didn't mention imperialism, any more than the novels -- or Dubya's speech-writers.
Meanwhile, another of my favorite villains has resurfaced:
THE FIENDISH PLOT OF MING THE MERCILESS
[Adapted from the Irish Times 5 Nov 2001]
The cannabis campaigner, "Ming the Merciless", has been arrested in Dublin this afternoon in connection with posting what is believed to be cannabis too close to 300 politicians and journalists.
He was detained while attempting to hand deliver a potted cannabis plant to the offices of a senior Government Minister, and taken to Pearse Street Garda station where he is being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
Earlier today, several letters containing what is believed to be cannabis and addressed to politicians at their offices were discovered by officials checking the post following recent anthrax scares.
"Ming the Merciless", whose real name is Luke Flanagan from County Roscommon, is a well-known campaigner for the legalization of cannabis. He ran in Galway West on a legalize cannabis ticket during the 1997 general election and also ran on the same platform in the European Parliamentary elections in the constituency of Connacht-Ulster.
Every country gets the villains it deserves. And as Joyce would say, there's lots of fun in Flanagan's work."
